You’re tired. They’re tired. It sucks, but help is at hand.

When it’s 2am, they’re screaming and you’ve had no sleep - things look pretty bleak. But it will be morning soon, and everything will look better in the daylight, especially when following advice from Tommee Tippee...

We know all you really want is a full night’s sleep, but that’s not likely to happen in the first weeks. In the meantime, check out these practical ideas and products for night-time survival - hopefully they’ll brighten up a few of your darkest night-time moments.

THEY DON'T KNOW IT'S NIGHT!

Newborn babies don’t know the difference between night and day. If your little one sleeps all day and is up all night, you could try feeding and playing with them in a brightly-lit room during the day, then keeping the room really dark at night, with as little interaction and stimulus as possible. This usually does the trick.

Usa la tua residua lucidità mentale per cose che richiedono concentrazione, come contare le dosi di latte in polvere (avrai bisogno di un dispenser). CIUCCI FLUORESCENTI!

Si sveglia e vorrebbe solo il suo ciuccio, tu lo cerchi dappertutto ma non lo trovi, allora accendi la luce e lui/lei si sveglia del tutto. Aaarrggh! Con un ciuccio fluorescente, quei momenti esasperanti saranno solo un ricordo.

SOCIAL MEDIA - I TUOI NUOVI MIGLIORI AMICI?

Facebook è pieno di ottimi gruppi dedicati alla genitorialità e spesso puoi trovare online qualcuno che è sveglio a mezzanotte proprio come te, alle prese con le tue stesse esperienze. Fai qualche ricerca durante la gravidanza e unisciti ai gruppi che ti sembrano più attivi e di aiuto, ne vale la pena. Solo una cosa: ignora chiunque dica che è facile. Sta mentendo.

Night-time breastfeeding

Top up their tummy with a feed before you go to sleep, so you can hopefully sneak a couple of hours before they wake. When they do wake, you could try changing their diaper before nursing - if they fall asleep immediately after they'll be more comfortable in a dry diaper. And make sure you have plenty of snacks and drinks for you - breastfeeding is energy-zapping work!

You may want to give them a bottle before you go to bed, get the cooled boiled water ready and the formula re-scooped and keep it in a bottle warmer for when they wake. Poo smells just as bad at night

When it comes to poo, your beautiful newborn doesn’t care if it’s day or night. Keep plenty of nappies, a change mat, and loads of wipes by your bedside, and consider a decent diaper bin - the last thing you want is to be kept awake by unfriendly odors!

The morning after the night before

Once your day-brain has warmed up, it's a good idea to round up the night's bottles, teats, pacifiers and teethers and pop them in a sterilizer so they're clean, safe and ready to use minutes later. If you're using night-time pacifiers, you'll need to sit these in daylight so they're charged up for that night.

Let's just make it through till morning

When it comes to survival at night, you can buy fancy equipment and prepare as much as possible, but it's still tough. Ultimately, you're working on their schedule and all you can do is keep calm and #parenton!
